When someone is treated badly in a particularly hurtful or hurtful way, revenge is sometimes considered the most satisfying way to regain one's sense of self-worth. This plan, however, has an immense possibility of backfiring in ways never imagined. In fact, the outcome of the situation in question is sometimes worse than it could have been if this course of action were taken. Arthur Miller demonstrates this in his tragic work The Crucible, showing the reader that although giving in to feelings of revenge is easy, choosing the path of forgiveness often leads to better long-term outcomes. The main way Miller conveys this message is through the unethical relationship between the married John Proctor and his young servant Abigail Williams. During their relationship, Abigail grew to love John, and in her eyes, he loved her too. So when Elizabeth, John's wife, found out what was happening and the relationship was abruptly ended, Abigail believed that Elizabeth was the only thing stopping the two of them from leading a happy life together. John was forced to stop seeing her; otherwise he would have risked losing his wife and children. I never knew what a sham Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenant men! And now you ask me to take away my light from your eyes? I won't, I can't! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever the sin, you still love me!' in an attempt to get him to confront the fact that deep down he still loved her as he once did (177) Abigail simply could not accept that he had not loved her and had perhaps never loved her in the way she believed. to love him. Rather than accept this and the fact that she was wrong to be with a married man like him, Abigail instead chooses to take revenge on Elizabeth, the woman who stood in the way of her love...
