Beowulf - Hero of Epic Proportions Beowulf is "strongest of the Geats - greater / and stronger than any in this world" (ll.110-111 ). Although he is famous for his enormous strength, Beowulf has other notable attributes besides his strength. These attributes, arrogance, courage, and a strong love for his people are what makes Beowulf such a powerful and epic hero. Beowulf is arrogant. He constantly boasts of his supreme strength. The “strongest man in the world” lets people know that he is the most powerful person around by saying, “no strength can compete with mine” (l.267). Beowulf doesn't think anything can ever destroy him. Of course he never wonders what his fighting skills would be like when he was in his seventies. Since Beowulf is convinced that God is watching over him, his ego makes him act as if he is invincible, due to the idea of having a guardian angel. But, as Beowulf gets older, wiser, and fights in more battles, he should realize that there was a possibility that he could die. Beowulf also boasts of his many battles and is proud of himself for having won them all. One of these triumphs is the battle in the water when he encounters nine sea monsters that he kills and fights with a monster that is sinking its jaws into Beowulf's flesh. Beowulf proclaims that “I have fought that beast's last battle, / I have left it floating in the sea” (ll.290-291). In this epic tale we read that while Beowulf is in battle with Grendel's mother, all he cares about is the fame he would gain for defeating her. Unferth thinks Beowulf was arrogant, saying, "Thou art Beowulf, art thou the same / Boastful fool who fought a swim / A match with Brecca" (ll.239-241). Yes, Beowulf is a conceited fool who loves the attention his strength gives him. A strong and arrogant man, Beowulf is also brave. Even after all the horror stories he hears about Grendel, he continues to fight the cursed beast without any hesitation. When he fights Grendel, he does so without the things everyone else would use: weapons. This shows that Beowulf is not afraid of anything in the world. He also has to be brave to fight a sea monster after swimming in the ocean for days. He went straight into battle exhausted, after the arduous journey across the ocean.
