The second party system in the Jacksonian era and the party system we have today are similar in many ways, but the modernization of the world is what explains the main differences. The main similarity is that both systems have two central parties, often called Democratic and Republican. In Jefferson's time it was just that: two different parties. But as time passed the two parties evolved into sub-parties under one main party. For example, the liberal wing, the progressive wings, and other similar wings under the Democratic Party. Another difference between the present day and 1850 is that in that period the two parties both had similar interests, which consisted of concerns about money and how power related to money and how everyone should have equal opportunities. Now the two parties have very different interests. The main reason for this broad interest is due to the size of parties nowadays. They are huge compared to those of Jackson's time.
