Your mind is your predicament. He wants to be free from change. Free from pain, free from the obligations of life and death. But change is law and no fiction will be able to alter that reality” (Socrates). Death. The means to an end. Game over. Do we as humans have a choice about life or death, or is everything left to a higher power? Which is a highly debatable question that has no exact answer. Where should we draw the line in deciding who has this right, the patients, after all it is their life, the family or should it be up to the doctors, the ones who must participate in ending their own life? When looking for the solution, a person must contemplate his own beliefs and the many perspectives of people who could influence his choice. In this way, patients' religion, values and traditions come into play. The main reason behind the discussion is: what is suicide? “Suicide is death caused by self-directed abusive behavior with any intent to die as a result of the behavior” (CDC). Conversely, the option of death should be granted to a patient who suffers serious injury or is in a situation involving anticipated death, unless otherwise indicated in advance in his or her wishes.
