We continue to examine Ireson's literature. As pedagogy is a very generic term, it has some key elements listed here by Ireson et al (2000): i) Clear objectives ii) Inspiring with high expectations and capable of providing motivation iii) Technically appropriate and appropriate to its purpose and, iv ) Theoretically sophisticated. Referring to these strands, Ireson et al (2000) forcefully argue that there are no clear objectives in our educational structure at all levels, from pre-school education to university. The best we have is what is spelled out in the Education Reform Act (DES, 1988). In broader terms the aim is to “promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils”. She argues that mass opinion is divided on whether the emphasis should be placed on individual academic achievement or social development.
