Money was cut from programs that assisted the poor, such as: Children's Health Insurance Program and Food Stamps. I believe the lack of assistance programs, such as the programs mentioned above; they have actually increased the poverty rate nationwide. These programs benefit many poor families by providing low-cost food and insurance for children. Other programs similar to those that provided housing to families in poverty have also been cut dramatically, increasing the difficulty for people trying to qualify for such programs. So what can be done differently to reduce the level of poverty in Texas? Revenue should be increased through tourism and redistribute income towards industries. Texas has always been a tourism state; many tourists come to see the river walk, the Alamo, as well as the other major cities of this state. Along with tourists, Texas has the capabilities and natural resources to attract businesses to this state. It is important to attract development and jobs to Texas, as this will benefit the state economically, while providing more jobs and opening doors for those struggling with poverty. Increasing industrialization in Texas could be the beginning of effective poverty reduction
