1. The big picture: What are the big, broad dimensions of this problem or story, here in Chicago in 2010? In 2010, “the ghetto” was defined as poor areas with dense African-American populations. Nowadays the word ghetto not only describes a place, but is also used as an adjective to describe an area, or a type of people in general. The Chicago ghetto typically refers to the south side of the city. The Chicago Housing Authority, founded in 1937, was responsible for most of the housing available to the city's African-American population, a somewhat controversial topic. The Chicago ghetto today is still considered the south and southeast areas of the city. However, today the term ghetto is used to describe not only the African-American population, but new "ghettos" have arisen between different cultural contexts and neighborhoods. A neighborhood like Pilsen would be considered a ghetto by some, as it is home to much of Chicago's Latino population. Chicago's ghettos are generally the poorest neighborhoods, lacking whites, notable schools, safety, and good housing. While African Americans are no longer strictly confined to housing projects as they were decades ago, some still face the challenges of life in the ghetto. They face increasing risks of gang violence, dilapidated housing and overall lower standards of living conditions. This is not to say that people living in the ghetto are fine with lower standards, it is simply stating that these are the conditions people are presented with. What's the news on this topic?
