Love is probably one of the things that is written about the most and it is a peculiar thing: love; it makes us smile, cry, get angry and do crazy things. Everyone needs to feel loved on some level, whether it's the love of a parent for their child or the love between a couple. Love has been written about for centuries and brought us stories like those of Cupid and Psyche, Romeo and Juliet, and Orpheus and Eurydice. And then there is Sir Orfeo, the retelling of the myth of Orpheus, in which different types of love are showcased. They show loyalty, love, and the things that love makes the characters do. They all show in detail what crazy things deep devotion to someone can make us do. The first type of love shown is that of a wife towards her husband. Heurodis loves Orpheus so much that she tears her face with her own nails in desperation "And he broke her face, he bled" (line 80) after hearing that she is forced to leave him. He knows that there will be nothing Orpheus can do, even though he can warn him 'Now we must delete, do my best, because I can't go'. (lines 125-126). She is dragged into the fairy realm to spend eternity in a state approaching death. Having been married to Orpheus for a long time, she knows him and suspects that his absence will devastate him "|e king hadde a quen of priis". (line 51). This proves true when they meet by chance one morning when he can see the Fairy King hunting with his company, "Per messais ƥat sche on him seiȝe, ƥat had be so rich and so heiȝe, ƥe teres fel out of her eiȝe .” (lines 325-327) Her fear has come true. While Heurodis pines under the tree in the fairy world, Orpheus takes action to find her so much that after her disappearance he leaves his kingdom to dwell as a beggar ...... middle of paper ......what had he died instead of his lord, which shows Orpheus that he is an extremely loyal person, he would deserve the throne if he really knew wele bi ƥan His steward was a trewe man and he loved him as he should" (verses 553-555). The people cry tears of joy when they hear that their king has returned with his beloved. Orpheus and Heurodis are reinstated as kings and queen and reign for many more years, and the steward after their death. A steward who faints when he hears that his king is dead, a wife who pines for nothing, and a husband who lives in the desert for ten years. years, all done out of love and loyalty. This romantic story shows typical examples of what is thought to be imaginary love. Not only the imaginary love between husband and wife but also the bond between a king and his people.
