The invention of television financially affected film production in America with a large decrease in audience participation due to viewers choosing to watch TV at your own home. Throughout the 1950s, the film industry used specific elements to bring audiences back to the movies, such as cinematic innovations, marketing gimmicks, and adult-themed films. To compete with television, the Production Code changed as movie studios began releasing films to theaters that would show films not approved by the Production Code Administration (PCA). American cultural and social tensions were reflected in films of this period as risqué topics were discussed more openly instead of being swept under the rug. Following the end of the studio system, the film industry was threatened by the growing popularity of television after a few films. theaters went bankrupt and closed.
