There are two major problems law enforcement faces today that will grow exponentially as the field of law enforcement shifts in the future; have the potential to evolve into bigger problems than one might anticipate. The two issues are a simple cause and effect situation; as society has become more complex, so have the crimes that are committed within it. Therefore, the ever-increasing complexity of society and crime has created forms of crime that could not have been imagined twenty years ago. Consequently, the greater the number of potential crimes, the greater the number of potential criminals; the greater the number of criminals, the greater the number of people who need to be incarcerated. For this reason, technology-based crimes and correctional facilities are now and will continue to be major problems facing law enforcement. The field of law enforcement has evolved tremendously in the United States since the early part of the seventeenth century, when Boston, Massachusetts began using sentries. patrol the streets at night to protect the public; then in 1838, when the Boston General Court passed legislation allowing the city to officially appoint police officers, thus establishing the first organized police force in the United States (Boston Police Department). With this creation, the entire philosophy behind policing changed. The police have gone from simply enforcing the law to enforcing the law and preventing crime. He has become more proactive in his approach to law enforcement. From those humbly simplistic beginnings, law enforcement has transformed not only into community crime prevention, but also into cybercrime prevention. Technology, while inherently neither good nor bad, has been the catalyst for a new form of crime and a wholly innovative innovation.... .. middle of paper ......Roy Walmsley of the National Center for Studies Prison Studies has compiled global prison data that demonstrates the enormity of the U.S. prison population compared to other developed countries. Data shows that the United States has a prison population of 716 per 100,000 people; larger than China and Russia (Walmsley). In conclusion, due to the continuously evolving complexity of society and technology, the list of possible crimes will increase in nature; therefore, influencing the number of those who are incarcerated or placed in a community corrections program.
