The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart The Dice Man written by Luke Rhinehart is an incredibly thought-provoking and intentionally provocative piece that knows no bounds and seeks to cover every aspect of the human psyche. The exploratory nature of this book goes through topics that most novels and authors wouldn't dare touch. Rape, murder, sexual experimentation, racism, drug use, adultery and senseless blasphemy. The Dice Man covers them all, and when presented with the title quote "This book will change your life", I would clearly agree and argue that it will not only change your life in some way, but it will drastically change your perspective on things. the story of a psychiatrist named Luke Rhinehart who, feeling bored and dissatisfied in life, makes a conscious decision to let a roll of the dice dictate things in his life. For each decision Rhinehart faces, 6 new options are provided, one option for each face of the die. Simple judgments are based on “Should I brush my teeth now or in 10 minutes?” and “Do I play with my children?” Or try to seduce my wife' were all left to chance or as Rhinehart says “at the whim of the dice”. Written in the first, second and third person, different from chapter to chapter, the novel - Become a parent - is also decided by the whim of the dice. What parts of the story to include, what perspective to take during a chapter, and even what writing style to include to portray certain scenes (articles, criminal declarations, fan mail, etc.) The novel moves quickly and the irregular pacing can be compared to that of a novel about drug addiction. As if the author himself in certain chapters of the book had decided to "shoot himself suddenly" before typing on the keyboard. On the other hand the n...... middle of paper...... do you also do it with my existential beliefs? I could eliminate my cognitive thinking to blindly follow a religion like Diceliving had become for many characters in Luke's life. Satan, Buddha, God, Allah, Mick Jagger. This novel made me wonder whether religion is the removal of the self or whether religion is actually food for that self's ego. Overall the novel, as the title page states "this book will change your life", and pushes you to think about things. and in ways you had never seen before. Luke Rhinehart remained true to his goal and did everything the die commanded, showing true devotion to a cause that sent the world into chaos. “In the beginning it was chance, and chance was with God and chance was God. In the beginning he was with God. All things were made by Chance and without him nothing would have been made. In Case it was life and life was the light of men”
