Topic > Cognitive Development: Erikson and Kohlberg - 1100

We go through many phases in life and we have no names for them. This changed when Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg went deeper with them. They discovered the many life stages that every person goes through. Their phases define what I have gone through and what I will go through. While Piaget focuses more on cognitive development, Erikson focuses on social development, and Kohlberg maintained his focus on the development of morality. As newborns, Piaget states that children are in the sensorimotor stage, where we lack object permanence and have reflexes. An example in my life would be my caregiver playing peek-a-boo with me to get me to stop crying because I thought she was missing. I was born with a grounding reflex that helped me reach for my mother's nipple to feed. According to Erikson, we develop basic trust with people. When I was young, a friend of my caregiver's son wanted to carry me but I had no idea who he was, so my natural reaction was to cry. Another thing that didn't help was that he was a big guy and in my eyes he was menacing. At that stage Kohlberg explains preconventional morality: self-interest and what we gain. I bit a boy in my class because he was teasing me, and that led to me getting punished for it. Later, whenever he bothered me, I would talk to him rather than do anything physical because I didn't want to be punished by my guardian and/or parents. The preoperational stage is when children start to think that everything is about them and start to use language more. . I played pretend at home with my cousins, they entrusted me with the role of mother and I often talked about that world when no one knew what I was talking about because I took it for granted that everyone knew my world. I started doing things on my own at an early age... mid-paper... and finding a job will be difficult because of all the competition from other candidates. I will eventually find a job that I will like and love. Since studies suggest that soon after I get a stable job and know what my preference is, I will look for potential mates and eventually marry one. Maybe even have kids and live in the stereotypical white picket house, since I'm a simple person. The life I have had and the life I will have have completely changed me as a person. I have become more confident and am learning to be independent. This would not have been accomplished without the motivation of my parents and their endless trust and support towards me. My friends also influenced who I was through good peer pressure and avoiding misguided kids at school. I still have a lot to face in my life according to Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg.
