In The Jungle, the character of Jurgis, who is also the protagonist of the story, undergoes a huge transformation over the course of the story. Jurgis' moral values slowly decline in each chapter as his life slowly spirals downward. At the beginning, Jurgis has a strong feeling of devotion towards his family along with a positive attitude towards his new country in which he is about to live and work. She vows to work hard and earn money to pay for the wedding veselija. He eventually finds a job and earns enough for the family to settle into a house. When his son Antanas is born, Jurgis finds it more difficult to endure the brutal working conditions and must also worry about his role as a father and husband at the same time. The family slowly slides into poverty, as they cannot keep up with their work. Jurgis begins to distance himself from his pregnant wife, Ona, during their affair, and Jurgis eventually turns to alcohol. Jurgis reaches his breaking point when he discovers that Ona has been molested and then raped by her boss, Phil Connor. Jurgis then rushes to Ona's factory and beats Connor. Eventually he is arrested and sentenced to thirty days in prison. While in prison, he worries about his family, who no longer has a breadwinner to support them. Upon release from prison, Jurgis discovers that Ona is in labor. However, the child dies and Ona dies shortly after. Mourning the tragedy, Jurgis takes three dollars from the money the children earn and spends it on alcohol. Tete Elzbieta convinces him not to forget his son, Antanas, so Jurgis finds work in a steel mill to support the rest of the family. One day, returning from work, Jurgis learns that his son has tragically drowned. He then abandons his family and hitchhikes on a rail car to the countryside. Jurgis spends the rest of his seemingly broken life finding work and using the money he earned from drinking. He also turns to a life of crime, as he soon believes that crime is the best possible way to survive. Towards the end of the book, Jurgis attends a socialist meeting. As he listens to the speech, he becomes interested in the ideas behind socialism and reacts as if he thinks it is a new religion.
