Guy Montag, was a fireman. The dictionary definition of firefighter is: “1. Firemen; 2. Person responsible for extinguishing or preventing fires. (Dictionary) The fireman in the novel was the exact opposite. They started the fires because the government wanted to destroy the thought process, controlling and dictating life and diminishing the imagination. The ironic thing about Guy Montag was that he was a fireman and had been collecting and hiding books for 10 years. He was bored with his life and Clarisse gave him food for thought. Guy enjoyed her company and enjoyed the conversations that would take place between them. Part of his curiosity came from the interesting things she would tell him. He was also curious as to why the law deemed it illegal to own the books and he hadn't actually read any of them until he saw a woman, who committed suicide rather than watch her books and her house burn, sacrifice herself for the books. The front porches were removed for the purpose of controlling their minds and thoughts. I believe that eventually, if the world continues to evolve in the direction it is headed, then even the firefighters known as real firefighters could be transformed into an exact replica of the firefighters of Fahrenheit.
