Which punishment is crueler, life imprisonment or the death penalty? This is an issue that many politicians and the average individual debate regularly. The death penalty is the more controversial of the two because the end result is the death of an individual; for many no one deserves it, even considering their crimes, but for others those individuals got what they “deserved”. Robert Glen Jones Jr., a 43-year-old Caucasian male, was executed approximately one month ago, on October 23, 2013, after being convicted of six counts of first-degree murder, resulting in death of seven people. Jones is one of 36 Arizona inmates to have been executed since 1992, but also another interesting piece on the provocative topic of the death penalty (Kiefer). Jones Jr. committed three crimes, which ultimately led to his death earlier this year. It was the late afternoon of May 30, 1996 when Jones and one of his accomplices, Scott Nordstrom, entered a smoke shop in Tucson, Arizona. One witness described Jones as having red hair and was also stated to be wearing cowboy boots (Kiefer). Immediately after entering the tobacco shop, Jones shot Chip O'Dell right between the eyes (Kiefer). Jones and Nordstrom continued shooting and then Jones chased an employee, Tom Hardman, into the back room, where Jones fatally shot him (Kiefer). A third employee was later shot and injured, while two others managed to escape safely and unharmed. The smoke shop wasn't just the farce of tandems. Jones and Nordstrom waited just two weeks to kill again. June 13, 1996 was a scary night for four people at the Fire Fighters Union Hall, also located in Tucson. Carol Noel, one of four victims that night, was not only shot twice, in the middle of the paper. Halperin, Rick. “Death Penalty News: Arizona Executes Robert Jones Jr..” The Associated Press, 2013.
