“Stuff they had in seventh and eighth grade, we were only learning as juniors and seniors in the all-black school” The teachers would not have had the materials to be able to teach or they would intentionally teach slowly so African American children would have a harder time in life. At that time in the South schools were kept separate. Schools in the North had integrated before because racism wasn't as much of a problem as it was in the South. Little Rock was one of the first schools in Alabama to integrate blacks and whites into the same school. Little Rock admitted nine African American students giving them the name "The Little Rock Nine". After the Supreme Court approved the federal law allowing black students to attend the school of their choice in 1964, nothing happened for three long years. The governor of Alabama (Orval Faubus) used the national guard to block the school that admitted only white students. This continued until President Eisenhower deployed the 101st Airborne Division. The National Guard backed off and the nine students went to school. At first everything went smoothly. Most people wouldn't pick on black people.
