I. Synopsis Edward Prendeck has been shipwrecked and a passing ship bound for an island saves him. Arriving on the island, Prendeck meets Doctor Moreau who decides to let him stay. One night, Prendeck hears the cries of a tortured puma, so he runs into the forest where he encounters bestial men. Prendeck seeks an explanation from Montgomery, but when he fails to give a clear answer, Prendeck concedes and sleeps. After seeing the human-like banded creature the next day, Prendeck assumed that Moreau was using human vivisection and that he intended to experiment. about him later. Horrified and fearing for his life, Prendeck runs back into the forest and encounters an Ape Man who leads him to other human-animal hybrids led by the One Who Speaks the Law that recites the island's prohibitions. Moreau arrives and Prendeck flees into the ocean to drown himself because he doesn't want Moreau to experiment on him. Montgomery and Moreau explain to him that animals are vivisected to resemble humans. Prendeck believes it and stays on the island. But one day, Prendeck and Montgomery find the corpse of a bloody rabbit. Since eating meat is against the Law, Moreau had to find the violator, who is the Leopard Man. Prendeck shoots the Leopard Man out of mercy; so Moreau gets angry but can't do anything about it anymore. One day, the puma escapes from the laboratory and Moreau tries to chase it. However, when Prendeck tries to find Moreau, he was already dead along with the puma. Montgomery, drunk and out of his mind, gives the Beastmen alcohol which causes them to go on a rampage. Prendeck makes an effort to stop him, but Montgomery ignores his advice. Prendeck checks on the fight later that night only to find that Montgomery dies before him. Prendeck soon escapes the island and a ship rescues him; however, when he tells about Doctor Moreau's island, everyone thinks he has lost his mind.II. SummaryANIMAL CRUELTYIn the book, Moreau performed vivisection on animals numerous times. He would combine some parts of different animals to obtain his perfect creature. The puma on which Moreau performed the final experiment was suffering severely during Prendeck's stay on the island. Prendeck even shivers hearing the cries of the puma to the point that he already feels the pain that the puma was suffering.
