According to Mark Early, president of Prison Fellowship International, the Bureau of Justice Statistics report shows that there are 19 states that have prisons operating at 100% capacity and another 20 are falling behind them . No wonder why prison overcrowding is talked about everywhere. Not to mention how bad this situation is and how bad it could get. Many citizens of the United States do not understand why this is such a serious issue because some of them believe that it is not their problem. Therefore they simply don't care. Furthermore, some Americans may say that they don't care about what might happen to prisoners due to the repercussions of overcrowding, because it's their fault. To cure this growing problem, people need to start caring about what is happening, even if they are people who might deserve it. The problem is that people who are incarcerated don't need to be incarcerated. Instead of trying to do what's best for criminals and help them, we're just throwing them in prison for so many years hoping that will help. Yes, this idea works in some cases, but in other cases throwing the person away for many years actually makes things worse. They don't get the help or care they need. I talked to a man who was in prison for many years and he said that getting drugs in prison is much easier than getting them out of prison. He also said most drug offenders return to prison because they don't get help for their addiction. They are put in a situation that only makes their addiction worse. People might say that the problem of prison overcrowding doesn't concern them, but if you are a taxpayer this problem... is middle of paper... ....2013.Frantz, Michael. “Overcrowding in Federal Prisons: Costs, Reasons, and Alternatives!” PRLog.
