Amir and Hassan seem to have a typical "best friend" relationship and a brotherly type of relationship, but the fact is that their relationship is more complicated than it seems. The two boys have a decidedly different relationship than usual. Once the reader starts reading this novel, he realizes that their friendship is not strong and is one-sided. Hassan loves Amir and I believe his love for Amir grows unconditionally. This shows me that he understands Amir very well at the beginning of the kite tournament, when he assures Amir that "there is no monster" and that he should just fly his kite. Deep down, Hassan knows that Amir likes to feel superior to others, and when he teases Hassan for not knowing big words, he puts up with Amir's teasing as a way to keep the friendship alive. For example, Amir tells Hassan to stop talking to him, after Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan and even after Amir accuses Hassan of stealing the watch, he remains loyal to Amir and tries to preserve their friendship.
