During the end of the novel the mood changes to anticipation and the tone of the story is exasperation and anger. At first Ponyboy Curtis is attacked by the Socs and is threatened with cutting his throat and then the Greasers arrive and scare the Socs to save Ponyboy. The next evening Ponyboy and Johnny go to see a movie with Dally, they sit behind a couple of attractive girls. Dally flirts with them offensively and then Johnny stands up and tells him to stop harassing them. Dally angrily leaves and then Johnny and Ponyboy sit with the girls. Two-Bit arrives with 3 other Greasers to take the Soc girls home. Along the way Randy and Bob, the drunken boyfriends, encounter the Greasers. The girls leave the Greasers and get into the Socs' car to avoid a fight. Ponyboy comes home late, so his brother Darrel is furious with him, Ponyboy fed up with Darrel's constant criticism and questions, Ponyboy yells at him. The brothers argue furiously and Darrel slaps Ponyboy in the face. Ponyboy runs away with Johnny, they meet Randy and Bob at the park. The Socs attack Ponyboy
