The Odyssey is one of the oldest stories ever written, and it is amazing how it has remained around for so many years. It's very nice to see such an old story be interpreted in a vastly different time period and with an almost completely different plot. O brother, where are you? it's a brilliant film. It makes the movie so much more meaningful when you've read the book and can make the connections. At the beginning of the film it is said that it is based on the Odyssey and with all the appearances of similar characters and events, it would be extremely difficult to write a three-page article on how O Brother, Where Art Thou? it is not based on the Odyssey. In this regard, O brother, where are you? is based on many of the characters and events of the Odyssey. Ulysses Everett McGill plays Ulysses, the hero of the Odyssey. First of all, they are both protagonists of their own stories. They have similar characteristics such as being charismatic, opinionated and being a strong leader. All typical elements of being a main character. Interestingly, in the film Everett was a terrible fighter, unlike Ulysses. In every situation he was beaten and then had to defeat the opponent with his brain. Ulysses was definitely a "Dapper Dan Man". A connection for this could be that it shows the character's arrogance in always having to look good and smell good or how both are so important. Another obvious connection is the Cyclops. On Odysseus' journey he encounters a one-eyed giant who is a Shepard. Everett meets a similar character. It's a big Bible salesman who beats him and Delmar and kills the toad they think is their friend Pete. Ulysses defeats the Cyclops by stabbing him in the eye with a wooden stick...... center of paper......laus is the name of the king of Sparta who fought alongside Ulysses. In the film, Ulysses, Pete, and Delmar float in a coffin after the area where his house is located is flooded; In the Odyssey, Odysseus sails on a raft for 17 days before Poseidon destroys it. The challenger in the governor's race is called Homer. The Odyssey is a great read and I think it is very important that we read it in high school. Contrary to Mr. C's belief that every story is a rip-off of the Odyssey, I think that just because it is so old and there are so many different parts of the book that every new story can't help but contain some of the Odyssey. . O brother, where are you? it's truly one of my favorite movies and it's a real pleasure to understand the plot better. With so many references to points and characters, O brother, where art thou? it is obviously based on the Odyssey.
