Duality in Fahrenheit 451Dualities are the most basic of comparisons and are the easiest for the mind to understand as total opposites are brought to attention. These opposites unconsciously provide deeper insight into the material and consciously entertain. In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, many dualisms are included both within Montag and the outside world that provide 180-degree flipped views, giving the book additional depth and inner meaning. Within Montag's many layers lie several opposing sides. For example, Montag is a firefighter who burns books for a living but at home spends his time reading novels, poetry, and other written material. Although Montag can be called a hypocrite, he does not like to read and burn at the same time; he goes through a change that makes him love books. Human beings have the power to change and grow from one extreme to another, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Also, when Mildred is with Montag, Montag has no feelings for her but thinks of her being killed by the bombs. He has both the knowledge that Mildred doesn't love him and the heart that truly cares, but he doesn't know how to deal with this situation. His feelings are oppressed; it takes an important event (the bomb) to shake them from lethargy. There are many dualities in the outside world of Fahrenheit 451. For example, Montag receives conflicting lessons from Faber and Beatty about what to do with books and how to behave. Beatty and Faber are like black and white: total opposites, no matter how you look at them. This "flip side" clearly compares book burners to book readers, hate to love, and also gives the reader the opportunity to "choose" their side. Furthermore, fire is used to burn houses and books, to destroy goods; it is also used by marginalized men to cook their meals, keep warm and provide them with light. Fire has, in itself, two contrasting sides that include destruction and preservation. The fire gives Montag and the reader the understanding that a thing can have both good and bad qualities at the same time and that many powers can be ruined if used for negative intentions..
