Fahrenheit 451 - A Structured and Censored World Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 forces us to imagine a world so structured and censored that firefighters do not exist to fight fires, as they all the buildings are fireproof, but instead of burning books. Fahrenheit 451 is a horrifying account of what may happen in an all-too-close future when society takes "political correctness" to its extremes. One of the main characters you meet in Fahrenheit 451 is a young girl named Clarrise who was raised to live how things once were, in a time when people had true freedom. Because of Clarrise's outlook on life, she is labeled antisocial by her teachers and an outcast by her classmates. Clarrise meets another main character named Guy Montag. Montag is a firefighter who deep down doesn't want to live a life without having to think. Montag's inner thoughts become more and more a part of him as the book progresses. Montag eventually becomes something of a freedom fighter when he joins a group of people who hide and read books illegally. Montag's wife, Mildred, on the other hand prefers not to have to think, but rather to let others think because she simply says "yes, I agree." Mildred is the epitome of laziness. The most complex of all the characters is Fire Chief Beatty. Beatty is a man who once received an education, but has now turned his back on education and works to destroy it. Beatty knows what is in the books but chooses not to care, to do nothing but aid the destruction of the books. The characters' loss of freedom to read and think was not an act imposed on people, but embraced by people. People loved the idea of not having to think anymore. The desire to deal with problems has gradually been lost by people. As the desire to address problems has waned, people have stopped doing everything that was so-called "politically incorrect" so as not to offend anyone. After a while, not addressing problems became so natural that anyone who did was considered strange and a threat.
