Fahrenheit 451 - The Temperature at Which Books Burn Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, portrays censorship in the future through the fictional story of a man, Guy Montag, who suffers an "awakening" realizing the significance of his actions and the need to express the ideas that were oppressed by the future government. Guy Montag is a fireman who seems to warmly support and contribute to the burning of books, which is normal because firefighters, in a conformist future, burn books for a living. Meet Clarisse McClellan, an idealistic sixteen-year-old with strong beliefs against the social structure that oppresses individual thought and demands conformity. Clarisse opens her mind to new concepts and begins to perceive the world differently. Guy and the other firefighters have to burn down the book-infested house of an old lady who refuses to leave her house and her books, so she burns to the ground. with her books making Guy realize that "There must be something in the books, things we cannot imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there." (p.51) Guy steals two books from the lady's house and as time passes, he secretly reads many books until his wife discovers his secret and reports him. After that, Guy burns down his firehouse and the men inside it to escape being captured and consequently becomes his country's most wanted fugitive. Guy manages to escape and works with a small group of revolutionaries to restore the respect and circulation of books.&n...... middle of paper ......he marvels and after that, he begins to notice personalities of others. By asking him questions, Clarisse instilled in Guy a sense of curiosity that eventually led him to read the very books he should have burned. Guy became more observant and began to theorize about the “why” and really weighed his decisions after that. If Guy hadn't met Clarisse, he would never have questioned the morality of burning books. He would never question its logic. Clarisse lit the fire of passion in Guy that burned his entire life and gave him the strength and courage to fight for what he believed in.
