In the traditional juvenile justice system it is the adults who represent the offender in court and the adults who decide the sentence. While in Teen Court young offenders are offered a real jury made up of their peers who operate within guidelines set by adults but are allowed to play crucial roles in the juvenile justice system. Roles such as prosecutor, defender, clerk, jury foreman and sometimes even peer judges who together with the peer jury decide on an appropriate sentence which can range from letters of apology, community service hours, education/skills development classes or even service about a teen court jury that offers offenders the chance to become part of the teen court process. Another major difference between Teen Court and the regular juvenile justice system is that where the standard juvenile justice system focuses on punishment, Teen Court's main focus is on the rehabilitation of youth and is designed to educate the young offender about the impact his crime has on him. the community to help them in their transformation to become more socially responsible
